The Innovation Challenge
Collaborate with José de Mello, one of Portugal’s most prominent family-owned conglomerates. In this 2-week immersive experience, students will travel to Porto, Portugal, to tackle a real-world sustainability challenge relating to the future of energy employment and skills development. Students will work with one of Europe’s leading chemical companies as well as climate experts from Columbia Business School to understand the drivers and barriers of energy employment and skills development for industries to reach net zero.

Porto, Portugal, is a vibrant and welcoming city where students can immerse themselves in rich culture, stunning architecture, and coastal charm. With its walkable neighborhoods, historic sites, affordable living, and thriving arts and food scenes, Porto offers the perfect backdrop for global exploration and personal growth.

Meet one of our group leaders in New York and fly together to Porto, Portugal. Learn more about how we organize travel here.

Taught in English by expert innovators, you’ll apply the innovation process to a business challenge sponsored by a Portuguese corporation. Hear from successful entrepreneurs and work with local Portuguese students to apply Design Thinking, Problem Reframing and Stakeholder Mapping to address a real market need. Hopefully you’ll pick up some basic Portuguese in the process.

Housing will be dormitory style.
Breakfast and lunch are provided on site. Dinners will be a mix of in-house and restaurant dining.

After work, we’ll explore Lisbon, one of the most beautiful cities in the world rich with culture, winding cobblestone streets, inspiring street art, and fabulous food.
Porto has lots of hills and cobblestones, so bring good walking shoes.

On the last day of the program, each team will deliver their refined business pitch to the executives who call the shots. Will your team’s business idea inspire their next venture???

We’ll fly from Porto to New York, where you will continue on to your final destination.
